We returned to Moab Utah to do some exploring outside of Arches National Park. Someone had told us about two hikes that were well worth taking. Kudos for his recommendation! The first hike led us to a 150 foot wide arch that was 1.5 miles from the overflowing Colorado River. Along the way, we saw outstanding examples of the Freemont culture petroglyphs. To give you an idea of how big this arch is……We had heard that a person had actually flown an airplane through this arch at one time. Amazingly, we were asking for directions nearby and met a woman who knew the whole story about the plane. The next day we explored Negro Bill’s Canyon. It was so named in honor of the first African American to settle in Moab in 1877. This was a less strenuous hike going about 2 miles up the canyon and crossing the stream multiple times. The natural bridge was stupendous. It is 243 feet wide and is the 6th largest natural bridge in the world. Not to be diminished by the fact that when we got there, two people were standing on the top of it. Subsequently, the party on top proceeded to rappel down from 120 feet to the canyon floor. A thoroughly enjoyable ending to our adventures on the Colorado Plateau.
